APPLYING FOR A JOB
-
A lot of employers will be looking to hire someone who they know can hit the ground running, so a certain amount of experience will be preferred and sometimes requested. However, it really does vary depending on the job and employer.
Sometimes a vacancy will require an experienced floral designer for a large event, and others require shop assistance which involves retail experience and a little additional hands-on help with the flowers.
Freelancing can be a really great way to broaden your experience within the industry, but the most important thing is to be honest about your own capabilities so you and the employer both know what to expect.
-
No, we don’t ask you to specify this as we understand it depends on many factors such as experience, skills, travel, scope of work and so on. We recommend you discuss this directly with the employer. In our member resources you will find some helpful guidelines on what to charge as a freelancer.
-
Starter and Full Members receive vacancy alert emails when new jobs are listed, so you can see what is available in your area. Once we know we have a freelancer in your area we can also promote this.
-
It’s completely up to you how far you travel for a job, but considering traveling a little will open you up to a lot more jobs and opportunities. Our advice would be to look into the job fully before you decide if it’s too far for you to go. You may also want to double check if overnight accommodation is an option - some employers are very happy to cover the cost of an Airbnb for the right help - or ask about a contribution towards your travel costs.
-
Once you have joined with Full Membership you will have access to our vacancy profiles and to all the details you need to apply. All correspondence will be directly between you and the employer.
-
You will be paid directly by the florist or business you have worked for. Make sure you clearly state and agree your payment terms in writing beforehand and get a billing address. You will need to invoice for the hours worked once completed.
-
Yes, we highly recommend that you do have your own liability insurance. Some employers may ask to see confirmation of this.

Join as a Full Member and you can place as many vacancy adverts as you need to, whenever you need to. We will notify all members that you have work available and those interested will contact you directly. From here you can liaise directly with the freelancer for more information and to agree terms.
-
Our florists profiles will help you get an understanding of a freelancers background, experience and floral style. They should be able to share examples of their work and if required, references. We always recommend that you liaise with the freelancer beforehand and consider a meeting if this is possible.
-
We strongly advise you share your vacancy details as soon as you can but inevitably you may sometimes need help at short notice. If this is the case, please let us know, and we will promote your vacancy to all members and advise you if there is anyone in particular who we think would be a good fit.

-
Yes, we have an option for this on our vacancy listings, and we find freelancers do like to know what rate is being offered before they apply for a job. However, if your rate of pay depends on the experience or skills, you can say this. Some freelancers will also have their own set rate, so we recommend you discuss this directly and agree a rate in writing in advance.

“I knew that I would be needing some extra help with Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day and I wanted to reach out to experienced florists that didn’t need much direction. The whole process was quick and easy and I found someone with amazing experience and skill who helped make a usually busy and stressful time go very smoothly.”
