A BIT ABOUT ME

Growing flowers on my parent's farm, reading early 20th century flower arranging books and manuals, dabbling in the practice of Ikebana, hanging out with and walking my little Westie Minnie, cooking, drawing, making art, making clothes - I always have a project on the go!

My favourite flower… To work with - old garden roses and spiraea. To look at - poppies.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

2004-2008 BA Honours Fine Art Sculpture, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, University of Dundee

While I have never undertaken a formal qualification in floristry, I have worked with my mum from a very young age who is a trained florist and has been working in the industry for over 40 years. I grew up in a flower shop! My mum has taught me all the essential mechanics of floristry; wiring, design, composition, 'the twist', care and conditioning, and importantly attention to detail. I have been able to 'learn on the job' by working on wedding and event work over the years. I studied sculpture art school and have been working as an artist for 10 years alongside my floristry practice. I am proficient in techniques of casting, ceramics and building large scale installations. These two facets of my professional experience have greatly informed my eye for colour, detail, line, and composition; skills which I feel are invaluable and integral to beautiful floristry design. In March 2018, I set up a floristry business and flower farm with my mum called Days of Dahlia, we specialise in weddings and events and also host a flower school of workshops throughout the year.

PREFERRED TYPE OF FLORISTRY WORK

Any scenario where I can get my hands on flowers is my preferred work. I love creating a bouquet for someone's birthday just as much as I love bringing to life a couple's vision for their wedding flowers. I prefer to work in a wild, natural and garden-gathered style favouring arranging flowers with how they grow in mind. As a gardener and with new experience in flower farming, I have knowledge in seasonal varieties, vase life and how flowers grow. I specialise in creating designs without the use of Oasis, building creations in moss and chicken wire instead and using the old floristry tools such as pin frogs and floral pillows.
