Why would you want to freelance?

We work hard to bring our members incredible & diverse freelance opportunities both in the UK and internationally. It goes without saying we’re fully immersed in all things freelancing and freelancers, and we thought we’d share our top 7 reasons why we think freelancing is such an amazing thing to be part of.

  1. All the fun and none of the planning stress

one of the best bits about being an awesome freelancer is that you get to do what you love, creating stunning work with beautiful blooms, but with far less stress and responsibility than running your own events or shop. One of our members runs her own floristry business and dresses weddings for her clients, but she also finds real joy and excitement in freelancing as a way to develop her skills without the added pressure of planning: “I get such a sense of joy in working freelance alongside running my own business. It allows me to switch off from the administrative duties, the ordering and calculating stems and the intense time management of my normal work but still gives me the rush and excitement of event floristry that I love. I enjoy both strands of my work, but gain different aspects of the process whilst freelancing. I find I can embrace my creativity just as much when bringing another designer's vision to life, plus you get to see new places and faces!”

  2. Variety is the spice of life

We have florists from all walks of life on our books, some independent business owners in their own right, some full time freelancers, some part time who work across many different industries. Each new freelance opportunity offers something different, something exciting and can really help shape and build a well rounded career. The many different jobs and opportunities that are available for freelancing give such a great range of experience and you can find new challenges to explore all the time. Why stick to one thing when you can give it all a go and have fun in the process?

  3. Make florist friends

Have you ever felt a bit alone in the floristry world? Maybe you’ve felt like you shouldn’t communicate with others in the industry because of competition? Well we're here to tell you that what we value is community over competition, and that’s just what this is all about, a community. Because let's face it, who else can ever really understand that florist life quite like your contemporaries! We’re all in this together and meeting the right team of floral friends can really change your life. It goes beyond simply networking, its camaraderie, it's a shared understanding, its having snacks in your kit box and hand cream in your bag, its florist friends.

  4. Get to meet, hang out with and learn from your peers and gain experience with top florists in the industry

As well as making friends with other florists, with the right jobs, you can get to learn from the best in the industry. Remember Megan and Harry's wedding back in 2018? Phillipa Craddock and a team of at least 26 others created the incredible displays seen on that day, and there's no denying that becoming part of a team like that would be most freelancers' dream. The large-scale, high profile jobs are out there, and you could be part of the action, learning from the best in the floral world.

  5. Build your portfolio

Whether it's a shoot, a wedding, a corporate event or a shop position, freelancing gives plenty of opportunities to gather amazing content from the projects you are part of. Styled shoots and weddings are particularly amazing for this as a professional photographer will be involved, giving you access to amazing images showcasing your work for future jobs and opportunities. This, along with potential blog, magazine or even TV coverage can really elevate your work and the platforms from which you are seen.

  6. Work on projects, briefs and techniques you may not normally do yourself

We all know that no two weddings, events or even weeks in a shop are the same, and this challenge and chance to work on new and exciting projects is one of the most fascinating parts of freelance work. Large scale projects you would never normally attempt on your own, working with new ingredients or learning on the job creating something you’ve always dreamed of trying - these are what makes a freelancer's work so varied and interesting.

  7. See the world (and it's best venues)

Jobs come up all over the world within freelance floristry work, recently we’ve had a number of international vacancies appear on our jobs board, so as well as travelling up and down the country if you wanted, you could also be going global! Seeing different places and new exciting venues, buildings, monuments, restaurants, boats, shopping centres, stadiums… the list goes on. The scope for what is out there really is never ending, there are flowers and events which need florists all over the world, and we will continue to bring you these amazing opportunities on The Freelance Florist.

You can find out more about our freelancers and the vacancies we offer via the website. Our yearly membership gives you access to all jobs and opportunities that come our way, along with the ability to share job posts as and when you need.
